The Boy at the Top of the Mountain by John Boyne
NetGalley Description:
When Pierrot becomes an orphan, he must leave his home in Paris for a new life with his aunt Beatrix, a servant in a wealthy Austrian household. But this is no ordinary time, for it is 1935 and the Second World War is fast approaching; and this is no ordinary house, for this is the Berghof, the home of Adolf Hitler. Pierrot is quickly taken under Hitler's wing and thrown into an increasingly dangerous new world: a world of terror, secrets, and betrayal from which he may never be able to escape.
My Review:
Wow. That's all I can say. I read this book because I have an interest in WWII literature, and this one has a unique storyline. Paris orphan Pierrot is 8 years old when he is sent to Germany to live with his father's sister. His aunt is, as it turns out, a servant in Adolf Hitler's household. The book is divided into four sections- 1936, 1937-1941, 1942-1945, and the epilogue. You'll be drawn in as Pierrot (turned Pieter, for his safety), grows closer with the Fuhrer, and moves further and further away from his past self. What awaits him when Hitler falls?
